Trainer David Hayes was hinting at finding a slot for Vega Magic in the $10 million The Everest at Randwick in the Spring after the former West Australian sprinter scored a first up win in the Group 1 $1m Darley Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville today.

The win of Vega Magic topped of a gigantic day for David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig who saddled up four winners at Flemington today as well as winning the last race at Morphettville with Fuhyrk.
David Hayes said that the 1200m The Everest would suit Vega Magic ($4.80) perfectly after Craig Williams produced another first class ride to get the four year old home by three quarters of a length in front of $31 chance Missrock with another one of the outsiders of the field Casino Wizard ($61) running home to fill third spot just ahead of Secret Agenda ($7) in fourth.
The Darren Weir trained Black Heart Bart was sent out as the easing $4 favourite but after having a nice run just behind the leading division, had trouble finding clear space at a crucial stage in the straight and wound up in seventh position.
âI reckon he would be an ideal horse (Vega Magic) for The Everest,â David Hayes said.
âThere might be someone out there who has a ticket who might want to sit in with us.â
Hayes said that he was confident heading in todayâs Goodwood after Vega Magic had come through a solid preparation for his first run in the Eastern states and had been brilliant on the training tracks.
âHe trialled so well and he is a big athletic horse and he arrived over here from Perth about ten weeks ago in great order and just a pleasure to get a horse of his class,â Hayes said.
Williams settled Vega Magic in the first three and four and produced him at the right time in the straight to score a good solid win.
The win on Vega Magic one of four winners for the day for Williams who scored earlier on Iâll Have A Bit in the Group 3 $200,000 National Stakes (1200m) and on Exocet in the Listed $125,000 Centaurea Stakes (2019m) and on Fuhryk in the Group 3 $175,000 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m).
