Weir failed to secure a Group 1 win in W.A. with stable ace Black Heart Bart this season, the five-time Group 1 champ finishing runner-up in the Railway Stakes before a luckless run for ninth in last weekend’s Kingston Town Classic.

Chasing a consolation prize this weekend the Warrnambool-based horseman saddles-up his Sebring six-year-old Ulmann in the Group 3 $250,000 A.J. Scahill Stakes (1400m).

Ulmann was last seen running eighth in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) at the track on November 25 when just over two lengths off the upset locally-trained winner Great Shot.

Jockey Damian Lane had the mount that day for the fourth time on the trot.

The hoop’s other recent rides on Ulmann included a Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) win at Caulfield on October 21 and a brave fourth in the Group 3 Chatham Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day.

Back to the 1400m distance on Saturday in the AJ Scahill Stakes, Ulmann also has a change of jockeys with Rawiller coming on the horse for the first time since July of 2016.

Weir’s stable foreman Jarrod McLean told The West Australian that the 1400m should be ideal for the galloper on the weekend and that the booking of Rawiller gives the hoop a chance to atone for the unlucky Perth bid on Black Heart Bart.

“He finished just over two lengths from the Railway winner,” McLean said.

“He’s done extra well since the Railway. Brad’s run second on him over 1400m at Caulfield.

“This is Brad’s chance to get some compensation for bad luck on Black Heart Bart.”

As for the beaten Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) favourite Black Heart Bart, McLean said the champ suffered injury after copping a nasty early check in last weekend’s feature.

“It’s a muscle-related injury and he’s on the improve,” McLean said.

“He’s now more comfortable.”

Other standout AJ Scahill Stakes nominees meanwhile include State Solicitor who won the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes two back before an eighth in the Winterbottom Stakes on December 2 and the Stephen Miller-trained Railway Stakes fourth placed War Chant four-year-old Variation.

The AJ Scahill Stakes 2017 field and barriers along with Perth’s weekend racing odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au are all set for release on Wednesday.
